About This Lens

The TECNIS Symfony IOL by Johnson & Johnson Vision uses an achromatic diffractive surface and echelette design to correct chromatic aberration and extend the range of vision. In pooled binocular analysis of 6 clinical studies (310 eyes), distance VA was -0.02 logMAR, intermediate at 66cm was 0.11 logMAR, and near at 40cm was 0.34 logMAR. The defocus curve shows a characteristic gradual slope: continuous range from distance through intermediate with a gentle decline toward near.

Clinical Performance

Defocus Curve: TECNIS Symfony

The defocus curve below is based on published binocular clinical trial data, showing visual acuity (logMAR) across a range of distances. Lower values indicate sharper vision. The gray dashed line shows a standard monofocal lens for comparison. Stars reflect clinical performance at distance, intermediate, and near based on the published data.

Key Features

What Sets the TECNIS Symfony Apart

  • Achromatic diffractive surface: corrects chromatic aberration for improved image contrast vs. conventional diffractive IOLs
  • Unimodal gradual defocus curve: smooth slope from excellent distance through good intermediate, without discrete focal peaks
  • Pupil-independent performance: consistent vision quality in bright and dim lighting regardless of pupil size
  • 0.2 logMAR maintained to -2.0D: functional vision from distance to approximately 50cm
  • TECNIS platform: highest available spherical aberration correction

Patient Candidacy

Who Is the TECNIS Symfony Best For?

The Symfony is a strong choice for patients seeking extended vision range with enhanced contrast, particularly those who are frequently in varying lighting conditions.

  • Patients wanting excellent distance and intermediate vision with reduced glasses dependence
  • Patients who value enhanced image contrast and color fidelity
  • Patients comfortable with the possibility of mild nighttime adaptation
  • Patients without significant corneal irregularities or severe dry eye

Patients seeking strong near vision without reading glasses may prefer the TECNIS Odyssey full-range IOL. The Symfony prioritizes distance and intermediate over near.

Frequently Asked Questions

TECNIS Symfony: Common Questions

What is the TECNIS Symfony lens?

The TECNIS Symfony is an extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL by Johnson & Johnson Vision. It uses an achromatic diffractive surface and echelette design to correct chromatic aberration and extend the range of vision. Pooled binocular data from 6 published clinical studies (310 eyes) show distance VA of -0.02 logMAR, intermediate at 66cm of 0.11 logMAR, and near at 40cm of 0.34 logMAR, with a characteristic gradual slope from distance through intermediate.

How does the TECNIS Symfony compare to the TECNIS Odyssey?

The TECNIS Symfony is a proven EDOF lens with strong distance and intermediate performance and a well-established clinical track record. The TECNIS Odyssey is the newer generation full visual range IOL with AI-designed optics providing stronger near performance and better contrast sensitivity. For patients who primarily need excellent distance and intermediate vision with minimal nighttime side effects, Symfony remains a strong option. Dr. Zelenak can compare both lenses based on your vision goals.

Does the TECNIS Symfony cause halos?

The Symfony uses a diffractive design that some patients experience as mild halos or rings. Its achromatic technology reduces chromatic aberration compared to conventional diffractive IOLs, improving image contrast. Clinical data show it is generally well-tolerated, with pupil-independent performance providing consistent vision quality in varying lighting conditions.
