About This Lens

The TECNIS Symfony IOL by Johnson & Johnson Vision uses an achromatic diffractive surface and echelette design to correct chromatic aberration and extend the range of vision. In pooled binocular analysis of 6 clinical studies (310 eyes), distance VA was -0.02 logMAR, intermediate at 66cm was 0.11 logMAR, and near at 40cm was 0.34 logMAR. The defocus curve shows a characteristic gradual slope : continuous range from distance through intermediate with a gentle decline toward near.

Clinical Performance

Defocus Curve : TECNIS Symfony

The defocus curve below is based on published binocular clinical trial data, showing visual acuity (logMAR) across a range of distances. Lower values indicate sharper vision. The gray dashed line shows a standard monofocal lens for comparison. Stars reflect clinical performance at distance, intermediate, and near based on the published data.

Key Features

What Sets the TECNIS Symfony Apart

  • Achromatic diffractive surface: corrects chromatic aberration for improved image contrast vs conventional diffractive IOLs
  • Unimodal gradual defocus curve: smooth slope from excellent distance through good intermediate without discrete peaks
  • Pupil-independent performance: consistent vision quality in bright and dim lighting regardless of pupil size
  • 0.2 logMAR maintained to -2.0D: functional vision from distance to approximately 50cm
  • TECNIS platform: highest available spherical aberration correction

Patient Candidacy

Who Is the TECNIS Symfony Best For?

Symfony is a strong choice for patients seeking extended vision range with enhanced contrast, particularly those in varying lighting conditions.

  • Patients wanting excellent distance and intermediate vision with reduced glasses dependence
  • Patients who value enhanced image contrast and color fidelity
  • Patients comfortable with the possibility of mild nighttime adaptation
  • Patients without significant corneal irregularities or severe dry eye

Patients seeking strong near vision without reading glasses may prefer the TECNIS Odyssey full-range IOL. Symfony prioritizes distance and intermediate over near.
