TECNIS PureSee Lens : Newly FDA-Approved EDOF Cataract Lens in Michigan
The first and only FDA-approved EDOF IOL without a contrast sensitivity warning : purely refractive design with monofocal-like clarity and functional vision maintained to 40cm.
About This Lens
The TECNIS PureSee IOL by Johnson & Johnson Vision received FDA approval on March 12, 2026. It is a purely refractive EDOF lens and the first and only FDA-approved EDOF IOL without a contrast sensitivity warning.
The defocus curve is from a published head-to-head clinical study (JCM 2025) directly comparing PureSee and Eyhance. PureSee maintains functional vision (0.2 logMAR or better) to approximately -2.5D (40cm) : significantly wider than Eyhance (66cm), confirming its refractive EDOF design delivers genuine extended depth of focus. 97% of patients in clinical trials reported no bothersome visual disturbances.
Clinical Performance
Defocus Curve : TECNIS PureSee
The defocus curve below is based on published binocular clinical trial data, showing visual acuity (logMAR) across a range of distances. Lower values indicate sharper vision. The gray dashed line shows a standard monofocal lens for comparison. Stars reflect clinical performance at distance, intermediate, and near based on the published data.
Source: JCM 14-04967, Fig.1 : Binocular distance-corrected defocus curves, TECNIS PureSee vs TECNIS Eyhance (Journal of Clinical Medicine 2025). Functional vision (0.2 logMAR) maintained to approximately -2.5D (40cm).. Lower logMAR = better vision. 0.0 = 20/20. Green shaded area = functional vision (20/32 or better). Gray dashed = monofocal reference.
Key Features
What Sets the TECNIS PureSee Apart
- Purely refractive EDOF design: no diffractive rings : a continuous power change extends range without splitting light
- First and only FDA EDOF without contrast sensitivity warning: contrast comparable to an aspheric monofocal
- Functional range to 40cm: published JCM 2025 data confirm 0.2 logMAR or better to approximately -2.5D : wider than an enhanced monofocal
- 97% no bothersome disturbances: exceptional dysphotopsia profile in clinical trials
- FDA-approved March 12, 2026: newest premium IOL approval with approx. 500,000 eyes treated globally before US approval
Patient Candidacy
Who Is the TECNIS PureSee Best For?
PureSee is ideal for patients who prioritize exceptional visual quality, contrast, and minimal side effects : wanting genuine extended range without diffractive trade-offs.
- Patients who drive frequently at night and cannot accept halos or reduced contrast
- Patients with demanding visual occupations where contrast and clarity are critical
- Patients who want genuine EDOF performance (functional to ~40cm) without diffractive side effects
- Patients who are good monofocal candidates but want meaningfully improved intermediate and functional near vision
PureSee provides excellent distance and functional vision to approximately 40cm, but does not deliver the full near performance of a trifocal. Patients requiring extensive reading without glasses may prefer PanOptix or TECNIS Odyssey.
