About This Lens

The TECNIS Odyssey by Johnson & Johnson Vision is a Full Visual Range (FVR) IOL using AI-designed free-form nonparabolic diffractive optics to maximize contrast sensitivity across the entire visual range. Early clinical data (ASCRS 2024, 4 US sites) showed binocular uncorrected distance VA of -0.04 logMAR (20/20+), intermediate of 0.05 logMAR (20/22), and near of 0.13 logMAR (20/27) : a remarkably flat defocus curve maintained from +0.5D to -2.5D.

Clinical Performance

Defocus Curve : TECNIS Odyssey

The defocus curve below is based on published binocular clinical trial data, showing visual acuity (logMAR) across a range of distances. Lower values indicate sharper vision. The gray dashed line shows a standard monofocal lens for comparison. Stars reflect clinical performance at distance, intermediate, and near based on the published data.

Key Features

What Sets the TECNIS Odyssey Apart

  • Free-form nonparabolic diffractive profile: AI-guided nonuniform echelette design maximizing contrast across all distances
  • Broadest flat defocus curve: binocular VA maintained at 0.0 logMAR or better from +0.5D to -2.0D
  • Best-in-class contrast sensitivity: first diffractive IOL to maximize CS function in areas of out-of-focus light
  • Full Visual Range ISO classification: classified under ISO 11979-7:2024 as FVR : distinct from multifocal and EDOF
  • Tolerance to residual refractive error: built-in tolerance for small refractive errors for more consistent outcomes

Patient Candidacy

Who Is the TECNIS Odyssey Best For?

Odyssey is ideal for patients seeking maximum spectacle independence at all distances with best-in-class contrast and fewest nighttime disturbances among full-range diffractive lenses.

  • Patients who want continuous vision at near, intermediate, and distance with minimal compromise
  • Patients who want the best contrast sensitivity available in a full-range IOL
  • Patients who have had concerns about halos with other multifocal designs
  • Patients with less than 1.0D of corneal astigmatism

Patients with more than 1.0D of predicted postoperative astigmatism may not achieve the full visual benefits. Dr. Zelenak will review your astigmatism measurements during your evaluation.

Getting Started

Discuss the TECNIS Odyssey with Dr. Zelenak

Dr. Zelenak will evaluate your eyes, review your visual goals, and help you determine whether the TECNIS Odyssey is the right lens for your cataract surgery. No two patients are the same, and lens selection is one of the most important decisions in cataract surgery.

Visit our Custom Cataract Surgery page to learn about the full lens selection process, or review our Cataract Surgery FAQ for common questions.
