TECNIS Eyhance Toric : Enhanced Monofocal Cataract Lens for Astigmatism in Michigan
The first enhanced monofocal IOL with slightly extended depth of focus : excellent distance vision, functional intermediate to 66cm, and precise astigmatism correction with a near-monofocal dysphotopsia profile.
About This Lens
The TECNIS Eyhance Toric IOL by Johnson & Johnson Vision uses a higher-order aspheric anterior surface that modestly extends depth of focus beyond a standard monofocal, while maintaining the predictability and near-monofocal dysphotopsia profile that make monofocal lenses so reliable.
The defocus curve is from a published head-to-head study (JCM 2025) directly comparing Eyhance and PureSee. Eyhance maintains functional vision to approximately -1.5D (66cm) : a modest but real improvement over a standard monofocal, clearly illustrating the difference between an enhanced monofocal and a true EDOF lens like PureSee.
Clinical Performance
Defocus Curve : TECNIS Eyhance Toric
The defocus curve below is based on published binocular clinical trial data, showing visual acuity (logMAR) across a range of distances. Lower values indicate sharper vision. The gray dashed line shows a standard monofocal lens for comparison. Stars reflect clinical performance at distance, intermediate, and near based on the published data.
Source: JCM 14-04967, Fig.1 : Binocular distance-corrected defocus curves, TECNIS PureSee vs TECNIS Eyhance (Journal of Clinical Medicine 2025). Functional vision (0.2 logMAR) maintained to approximately -1.5D (66cm).. Lower logMAR = better vision. 0.0 = 20/20. Green shaded area = functional vision (20/32 or better). Gray dashed = monofocal reference.
Key Features
What Sets the TECNIS Eyhance Toric Apart
- Enhanced monofocal design: higher-order aspheric anterior surface extending functional depth of focus to approximately -1.5D (66cm)
- Toric astigmatism correction: addresses corneal astigmatism for cleaner distance vision
- Near-monofocal dysphotopsia profile: negligible halos and glare : ideal for patients sensitive to nighttime disturbances
- Clear functional limit at 66cm: JCM 2025 data confirm gradual VA decline beyond -1.5D : honest performance expectations
- TECNIS platform: 25+ years of proven performance and highest spherical aberration correction
Patient Candidacy
Who Is the TECNIS Eyhance Toric Best For?
Eyhance Toric is ideal for patients with astigmatism who want outstanding distance vision and functional intermediate at arm's length, while maintaining the predictability of a monofocal.
- Patients with astigmatism who are comfortable wearing reading glasses for near tasks
- Patients highly sensitive to halos, glare, or nighttime visual disturbances
- Patients with demanding visual occupations where contrast and low-light clarity are critical
- Patients with mild corneal irregularities where diffractive designs are less suitable
Patients who want to eliminate reading glasses will need a trifocal or full-range IOL. Eyhance Toric provides functional intermediate to approximately 66cm but is not a presbyopia-correcting lens.
