Clareon PanOptix Trifocal Lens : Cataract Surgery in Michigan
The world's most implanted trifocal IOL : clinically proven near, intermediate, and distance vision with more than 99% patient satisfaction.
About This Lens
The Clareon PanOptix Trifocal IOL by Alcon is the first and only FDA-approved trifocal lens in the United States and the most implanted trifocal IOL in the world. Using ENLIGHTEN Optical Technology, PanOptix creates three focal points: near (40cm), intermediate (60cm), and distance, delivering 20/20 or better at all three in clinical trials.
The defocus curve shows two clear peaks at distance (0D) and near (-2.0D) with strong intermediate performance at -1.5D. More than 99% of patients said they would choose PanOptix again.
Clinical Performance
Defocus Curve : Clareon PanOptix
The defocus curve below is based on published binocular clinical trial data, showing visual acuity (logMAR) across a range of distances. Lower values indicate sharper vision. The gray dashed line shows a standard monofocal lens for comparison. Stars reflect clinical performance at distance, intermediate, and near based on the published data.
Source: Kohnen et al. Am J Ophthalmol 2017; Clareon PanOptix binocular defocus curve, 6-month (n=127). Lower logMAR = better vision. 0.0 = 20/20. Green shaded area = functional vision (20/32 or better). Gray dashed = monofocal reference.

Patient Candidacy
Who Is the Clareon PanOptix Best For?
PanOptix is an excellent choice for active patients who want the broadest range of spectacle independence after cataract surgery.
- Active patients needing clear vision at all distances for work, reading, and driving
- Patients comfortable with the possibility of mild halos in low light during adaptation
- Patients without significant corneal irregularities, macular disease, or severe dry eye
PanOptix may not be ideal for patients highly sensitive to halos or who drive extensively at night in very low light. Dr. Zelenak will review your full eye health history.
