What types of dry eye are there?
- Aqueous deficient dry eye is where the patient simply does not make enough tears. This is more common as you age, with some autoimmune disorders, or with certain medications, chemotherapy or previous radiation treatments for cancer.
- Evaporative dry eye is very common and usually caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). This is where the oil glands in your eyelids are not working properly. This oil layer is critical in preventing tears from evaporating too quickly and when not working you can have dry eyes, eyelid inflammation and irritation.
- Contact lens-induced dry eye or contact lens overuse can cause chronic irritation to the cornea surface leading to irritation. Sleeping in your contact lenses, wearing them longer than recommended or not following proper hygiene techniques can also lead to an infectious corneal ulcer. As you might be able to guess, this is not a good thing.
- Neurotrophic keratitis is a condition caused by reduced corneal sensitivity due to nerve damage. This can be from certain infections or viruses, damage to the trigeminal nerve as well as procedures such as LASIK.
